First-Time Buyers

Buying your first home is something you’ll never forget. A home is a place where you build memories, enjoy friends, and maybe even start a family. It’s one of the best investments you’ll make, but it can also be a little stressful along the way. What can you afford? How does the approval process work? What if there are multiple offers on your dream home? These are all really great questions to ask.

Knowing what to expect and doing some research beforehand can go a long way in making the process of buying a home go a lot smoother. Plus, we are here to help!

Here are five tips we think every first-time home buyer should know before diving in.

Why Work with Me?

  1. Know your limits financially. One of the most important aspects of buying a home is understanding what your budget looks like throughout the process. It’s more than just a down payment on the home - you should consider closing costs and other fees into your budget as well. Your agent is a great source of information on what to expect.

  2. Maintain your credit. When you’re considering buying a home, it’s important to make your other payments on time and to avoid making any other large purchases in the time leading up to getting a loan for a home. You want your credit in the best shape possible!

  3. Decide what you will negotiate on. In a hot real estate market like we have in Northern Virginia, buyers are going to do anything possible to get a leg up among the competition. Decide ahead of time what you’re willing to offer and negotiate so you aren’t surprised in the moment.

  4. Make your dream list. When it comes to buying a home, we all have things that we consider “must-haves.” If you are dying for a big backyard for the dogs or for an extra bedroom for your growing family, let your agent know it’s a must-have!

  5. Find the right agent! It can’t be stressed enough to find someone who you trust to help you through the process of buying a home. Take your time finding the right person and brainstorm some important questions that you’ll want to ask them.
